Gingivitis and periodontitis, collectively known as gum disease, are quiet, progressive infections that affect the tissue supporting your teeth and are surprisingly common.
The earliest sign is often gingivitis, characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed easily when you brush or floss. If caught at this stage, it is entirely reversible with a professional cleaning and improved daily hygiene. However, if left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the tooth, creating pockets that collect bacteria. This can lead to bone loss, eventually causing teeth to loosen and potentially fall out. It’s important to look out for persistent bad breath, a change in your bite, and visible recession of the gums. During your routine check-ups, we always perform a gum health assessment, but if you notice these signs in between visits, please call us immediately.
